KGMU Administration Bows to Junior Resident Protest, Assault Case Sparks Uproar

Lucknow: The King George’s Medical University (KGMU) administration appeared to bow to the pressure of junior resident doctors following a heated protest. The agitation came after an alleged assault on nursing officer Shubham Rao by junior resident doctors in the Trauma Centre’s Orthopaedic Surgery Department on the night of September 20.

According to reports, Rao filed an FIR at Chowk Police Station against nine junior residents under IPC sections 324(4), 191(2), 115(2), and 351. Acting swiftly, the KGMU administration suspended four junior resident doctors involved in the case.

The suspension order, however, triggered anger among junior residents. Gathering at the New OPD, they staged protests and raised slogans, forcing the administration into negotiations. The agitation disrupted OPD services, causing inconvenience to patients, particularly those who had traveled long distances for treatment. To minimize hardship, the administration extended OPD registration hours till 2:30 pm.

Efforts to contact the victim, Shubham Rao, proved unsuccessful as his phone remained switched off. Nursing Association General Secretary Jitendra Upadhyay also refrained from giving a clear statement. Meanwhile, insiders expressed skepticism, noting, *“When doctors themselves investigate fellow doctors, the chances of fair justice are slim.”*

During the protest, junior residents were heard chanting slogans like *“We are doctors, not laborers,”* highlighting their defiance.

The demonstration lasted for about an hour, after which registration counters remained open until 2:30 pm to ensure patient care. In a balancing move, KGMU authorities decided to withhold the suspension orders of the four residents until the inquiry committee submits its report. Partial consensus for a settlement between both parties has reportedly been reached.

KGMU spokesperson Prof. K.K. Singh confirmed the developments.*
